Evan says "most would cringe at the idea of scratching or sanding something they spent hours painting, but that's my favorite art - creating the appearance that this wasn't made in the 21st century." And he's a self-taught artist, no less. You can view his work on his website at www.evanbharris.com, and you can buy prints online from

I think of my paintings as each comprising a small, often curious mythology, which addresses a shared understanding of loss and longing in the contemporary world, while at the same time revealing a fascination with the magical and poetic. I am interested in the way that ordinary objects, when juxtaposed with one another or placed in novel contexts, can take on a meaning that is somehow greater than the sum of the parts, that creates a visual poetry that transcends the everydayness from which it arises.

Each of Blaine Fontana's paintings is branded with his unique trademark of twisted and highly stylized figures or animals. Often passive, and somber with a grin, Fontana has labeled these characters "Templings", a fusion of two words, temple and being. Whether these beings are interpreted as people, gods, demigods, myths, shamans or your own reflection is up for interpretation. Neither male nor female they function as the face of a spiritual currency and ambiguity that heavily relates to the therapeutic intent of Blaine's paintings.

"Redeployment" has been created in support of U.S. troops but in opposition to America's continued and escalating engagement in Iraq. This sculpture is a metaphor for the thousands of troops who are respected and are of value to our society, but risk their lives every day in what has become an unwinnable quagmire. Each figure has been finished in gold with a white sash imploring our government to "Bring me home". The figures sit atop a polished black plane, which represents the dangerous, and soul destroying killing fields that our soldiers deal with everyday.

I started working with kiln-formed glass about a year ago; I use screenprinting processes to create the interior design motifs using powdered enamel. I have collected mid-century modern furniture, clothing, and housewares for many years, and my work is mostly inspired by mid-century block-and screen-printed textiles and household designs. I believe strongly in the notion of Functional Art and making attractive, useful, and, above all, affordable, things for the home.
