I've stuck to the staples of high school photography - black and white film in old cameras, shot on location with natural light, printed alone in the darkroom. Raw, chemical based photography in the digital age can evoke an arresting, uncomfortable sense of realism. In the darkroom, these girls float up through the chemistry as ghosts; you should be able to imagine them around you.

A hot bed of post art school angst has assisted in developing the highly stylized photographs by Catherine Clay. Vinchen wastes time creating reminders for things people would rather forget. In doing so Vinchen hopes to reinvigorate our atrophied sense of outrage and rouse us from the comfortable stupor to which we have grown so accustomed. Vinchen's intention is to redraw the way we receive our surroundings by adding to or removing from what ordinarily goes unnoticed; to create a spectacle hidden in clear view. Sometimes amusing but mostly antagonistic, Vinchen's work has been described as; "I don't get it".

The accelerating transformation of our contemporary life is evidenced paradoxically by both beauty and decay in our physical and social environments. My work explores the complex impact of exponential development on the human experience. I attempt to highlight such core humanist principles as our control over our surroundings, environmental adaptation, frailty, conflict and compassion. I investigate such key battle grounds as societal moeurs, technological adoption, man's (self) destructive force, communication immediacy, economic velocity and dislocations. The work approaches with awe and, at times, foreboding the inexorable power of change.

The complexities of the universe combined with the confusing chemical reactions controlling our human brains produce the ambition behind my creations. I have not yet gained full consciousness on my purpose in life or to what my actions will lead; nevertheless I have accepted that this knowledge is most likely unattainable. In the meantime, implementing the ideas formulated by experience, emotion and observation in the form of visual art aides my quest for answers and objectives.

My work studies life and death in the desert. It allows us to celebrate that which flourishes here and mourn that which made the attempt and fell. The beauty transcends the common conception of of the word "beauty"; and being harder to understand, brings the beholder even greater reward upon acquiring understanding.

My work tends to focus on the juxtaposition of natural and man-made elements, and on the graceful shapes and colors that occur around us every day to which we have become distanced and unmoved.

Photography for me is a creative medium that goes beyond a single photo. I am fascinated how a photo collage renders a two dimensional subject into a three dimensional scene. My work has evolved through the days of film and manual construction to the new age of digital. With the advent of digital photography and the ability to post process images the creative process exploded with new possibilities. I am thrilled with the journey and exploration ahead of me with this medium.
