It takes a conscious effort to walk around with a camera because you want to express something through images. How you want to see things, how you want to express things and how you want others to see it, are at your fingertips. You just have to try and make it interesting for yourself and the person looking at your pictures.

I try to create concept photos that ask questions and provoke thought. I try to move people from the safety of their environment and put them in situations that create real beauty by being a little uncomfortable.

Scarpati cannot make a guitar cry or sing. He cannot paint or draw. What he can do is infuse a photograph with the dual sensibilities of rock star and fine artist.

Many of the elements of my work are drawn from my childhood tendency of creating imaginary worlds. Elements of my work are also drawn from the overly-dramatic, slanted perspective from which children observe the world around them.

Atrophy is defined as ‘the degeneration, decline, or decrease, as from disuse.’ Inspired by the incredible and sometimes frightening urgency for change in our world, Hazart envisioned a photo series which would characterize their feelings concerning certain socio-political topics. The character of Atrophy Annie is neither a single person nor idea; rather she is a physical manifestation of ideas and issues that are affecting our world. The messages and opinions expressed in the photo series are at points blunt and direct while others prove more ambiguous and layered, but they all seek to display the ways in which our world is decaying.

I enjoy the challenges and rewards of shooting with film. My guidelines are rigorous but not humorless. Make every shot count—the viewer expects no less. It’s a single-malt view of the world. Finally—I read widely, and am interested in everything except television and professional sports.

In my life there are things I don't want to forget, and know I never will no matter how hard I try. There are particular things, though, that remain in my heart more-so than just my memory, and those particular things all deal with love. My art is inspired by the people and things that give me the drive to get out of bed in the morning and keep me up at night, and they are all that matters to me.

I Shot NY is my take on New York street photography as well as my travels across the globe. The photographs have a dynamic range that stretch from the streets to the personal interactions we have on and off of them. As a true New Yorker I feel no reason to set up props or unrealistic scenarios, I shoot in the moment and capture sites that would normally go unseen. Because ones eye can be finicky in determining what they feel is unique or pleasing, my intent is to try and appeal to everyone.

As someone who grew up in a small rural community, my perception of the city where I now live can somewhat be considered as one of an outsider looking in. Through photography and painting, I try to express my merging personalities. One of those personalities is a small town girl, used to the tranquility and comfort of the small farming community, the other, a cultural anthropologist adapting to the fast pace of metropolitan life.

The Durham Series features portraits of adolescents in my rural hometown in Connecticut accompanied by landscapes and details of their surroundings. The photographs quietly observe moments of their everyday being and consequently capture the issues of race, class and sexuality. The subjects, ranging from age eleven to eighteen, confidently allow me to see them for who they are. The images serve as a tool for my personal understanding and acceptance.

My pictures are mostly of things that seem out of the ordinary or of things that don't look like they belong. Unusual things are what can set the mood or the tone of the atmosphere, and I like to show people things that they'd normally overlook. As I take my photographs, I remember that the small details are often the most interesting.

I see photography as a medium separate from the other arts. It allows the artist to present something in a way that is solely the his or her decision, but the artist should be respectful of the medium's boundaries. My photographs present subjects in the way I choose, but don't try to make my subjects something they aren't. I don't believe in excessive manipulation or mixing photography with other mediums. Photography isn't painting. The restricts the artist and forces them to be creative with what they have.
