My paintings are symbolic representations of emotional states, a type of visual poetry in which I present the elements of a story to be interpreted by the viewer. Non-physical experiences, mood and emotion, are so powerful, they color and seemingly adjust the corporeal world around us. I seek to amplify the essence of a pervasive emotional interior through the symbolism of the themes I depict in my work. I often present animals or the forces of nature as allegorical elements and strengthen emotional association through deliberate use of certain color schemes that I find to be mood altering.

Tactful Color harmony, composition and mindful brushwork are the tools that for me work to create evocative and atmospheric paintings. Accurately loose brushwork is something I continuously push myself to master. In the end my hope is that people find the same balance of life and beauty in my work.

he minimalism I seek is romantic and humble. In my paintings I celebrate the elaborate pomp of the mundane. Out of darkness I hope to bring dignity and rest to beasts. To create a silence…but not of a clear head."
When writing an artist's statement I feel that I come across as either arrogant or like some sort of dandy. I apologize for the arrogance (the dandy part I rather like). So at the risk of ruining everything....

My work stems from an interest in philosophical theology. The work itself asks questions of metaphysics. How does a physical quantity relate to a non physical? There are decisions and layers create in the work, the decision is non-physical, the layers of paint and marks are physical in their condition. In their manifested state they exist as both.

“For me, painting is not so much the preoccupation with formal aesthetic criteria, but rather the visualization and development of the hidden possibilities. When I paint, I change into another person, varying or adding colors, ecstatically increasing and then destroying, until I reach a point that surprises. I am on the way, maybe for very long and perhaps in vain. But you’ll forgive the platitude `the journey is the reward´.”

Gwendolyn Richards is a Minneapolis based Illustrator and designer. Her belief is that all art centers around telling a story visually. That implied story is what makes it connect and appeal to the viewer. She majored in Comic Art and Illustration at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and started her own freelance illustration and graphic design business. Her watercolor work shines, and her style is bold, colorful, and graphic. She also finds it hard to write a bio about herself in the third person.

I began the series, "Urban Landscapes", five years ago. I had just moved to,Brooklyn and could not believe the amount of graffiti, it was everywhere! I loved the colors, drawing, overlapping lines and shapes, and have since learned a lot about what "writers" (graffiti
artists) do. They all have their own style and story and now my paintings are my way of paying homage to their talent. Some call it vandalism, most don't even notice it, but I see the beauty in a brick wall covered with graffiti. Add in strong sunlight and shadows, and this makes for a complete painting. My inspiration is always around the corner, on the next brick wall.

The seed for Andrew Owen Paul's ideas germinate from his actual dreams, a direct link to the subconscious. These are analyzed, parts are disseminated from the whole then structured for static narrative in 2D. Analysis of the images derived from his dreams reveal the artist's love of Japanese dystopian art combined with a statement about our world's greedy technofetishistic ways, and the entropy of a disposable sexual culture.

My paintings are mainly influenced by beauty, femininity, and grace. Which is why my main subjects are usually women.
The reason I prefer to paint portraits of women is because their faces and body language speak volumes. There are endless stories and emotions written in a single facial expression. Something you rarely see in the portrait of a male subject.

Each piece has its own unique story to tell and engages the viewer in subtle ways to allow for an individual interpretation. I let my feelings dictate the composition, and the colors flow without premeditation. The thought of clichés is anathema to my creative spirit, so I do not aim or pretend to please anyone. My only loyalty is to unfettered emotions and innermost thoughts, which allows me to savor the moments and set myself free to experience an entirely fresh journey during the birth of each painting.
