I like comic books and ancient mythology, mostly because I think they're the same thing.

I like space travel, transcendence and trees. I like making pretty pictures with little to no explanation behind them. As such, you will find none here.

Michael Ratulowski mines hip-hop culture through his work to approach race and stereotypes within the broader element of American culture. In using elements of hip-hop culture, and personal experiences from within, he deftly addresses issues surrounding race, stereotyping and discrimination that exist, whether conscious or not. Sometimes with an incendiary vision, Michael presents objects and text, which gather meaning based on presupposed notions and the suggested intent of the artist that challenge the way we think or the way we think we are supposed to behave.

I am a fine arts student living in
Chicago, IL. My current body of work explores ideas of decay, implied human presence, surreal experience, and the documentation of America's abandoned places. I work primarily with medium-format and full-frame digital cameras with as little as possible post-process work. It is my goal to be able to capture the tension, joy, stress, and absolute wonder of exploring places thrown away and forgotten by the rest of society. Through my work I hope to inspire others to push their zones of comfort and seek out new experiences for their own.

Transformation, Rebirth, Mortality, Sexuality, Chaos, the Other Side. These themes help progress my life upwards and out towards personal enlightenment. My work is abstract in nature, cosmic in appearance, and realistic in terms of approach. Trying to compare an earthly nature to a cosmic reality.

As a woman who draws women, I explore the female gaze. I go beyond any objectification or simplification of my subjects and delve further into their underlying emotions and personhood.

These are photos I have taken while stoned. Hopefully they can capture a little bit of how fun it was to take them. Beyond that, I don't know what to say.

This work is comprised of a series of random interactions and gestures with no preconceived idea of what should exist on the canvas. Like trying to understand the subtle movements that create ripples in a lake, shifting sand or fierce thunderstorms I am interested in the implied movement inherent in the work on an unconscious level- the movement as filtered through the process of life experiences.

I make pseudo-religious pop-political paintings. I want to make art for the masses that can be enjoyed by both the New Yorker reader as well as the Wal-Mart shopper.

My work is based on scenes from daily life and is, for me, about drawing out the narrative and creating an image that communicates with the viewer in a visceral way. Art is always about making that contact and, hopefully, inspiring people to see more of themselves and the world around them.

I create modern day allegories and iconography based on primary source material of extreme portrayals of beauty or desirability. This retelling is inspired by the pictorial inventions of
artists such as Giotto and Northern painters like Bruegel who communicated unbelievable events.

Timothy Pigott's puzzles, Polaroids, and portraits are influenced by people he meets, the post office, public transportation and parking lots. "Trying new stuff is the best. Mostly I like other people out there who are trying to have fun with it. Those are the people I end up exchanging artwork with and getting excited about." He lives in Chicago. Send him ink pens.

The art world has had a love/hate relationship with beauty for the last 100 years. I have no problems with it, and it frequently finds itself into my drawings.

Race, religion, gender, sexuality, nationality - tools of identity, symbols of both empowerment and discrimination. People dress in the symbols of their culture, the symbols of who they identify themselves as and who they aspire to be. Many have used markings on the face - tattoos, paint, scars, adornments - to communicate a place in the world, a place in a society. And as cultures, societies, and nations break down - the empowerment these symbols connect to is broken and lost. Sometimes we have to create new ones to take their place. And thus find our place once again.

I paint to describe the people who create the cultural movements that influence our perceptions and behavior. I draw from advertisements and fine art when painting. Advertisements give me insight as to how we want to look, whereas fine art allows me to think about cultures, both past and present. I use multiple layers of paint to create my subjects. The layer of small shapes on the surface of the portrait reflects my interpretation of the person or situation. These shapes can reflect the subject's interests, where they are going in the painting, or why I chose to paint them.
