Joseph Santandrea has been making art with words for over 20 years. His influences range from the ancient, rapturous poetry of Rumi to the contemporary word art of Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger and Ed Ruscha. His sculpture generally involves found objects and sign letters but paint, canvas and industrial supplies are often included. He has traveled extensively and incorporates the universality of the human condition in his works.

When we look at art we create a story in our minds about the content and we add to the context. Similarly, when we read a story, we imagine what the characters and their surroundings look like. We also speculate on the life of the artist or writer. And as far as the spoken word goes, we all know it's not always as easy as we may think or would have it to ask our souls to come out through our mouths. It's fascinating, delicate, and frustrating and in my art I am drawn to those things that allow me to include all of these aspects. There has to be a narrative and poetic quality to the images.

I was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Went to grade school in Kainta Rizal Philippines, High school in Brussels Belgium, and college in Springfield Missouri. I follow Diebenkorn's rules he wrote for himself on starting a painting and take direction from Alex Kanevsky who is a true master of paint. Kanevsky directed me to switch from my bizarre concoction of casein and egg tempera to just oil paint. He also gave me a proper appreciation for working from life. My subject matter is mostly people (friends, models, and crack hos) but I also do landscapes, interiors and some psychological sky things. Words to live by, by Stewart Copeland, "...and when the wombat comes, he will find me gone, he'll look for a place to sit.

My paintings are geared around the ideas of nostalgia, regionalism and normalcy. Being originally from Tennessee, I grew up around the regional art my parents collected. Art based around my own surroundings. After going to Europe I found myself feeling aged, sorting through old family photos in an attempt to gain some perspective on who I was and where I'm from. What was expected of me as an adult? What is expected of me as an American? The truth became clear to me that, as an American, growing up in the South, I shouldn't/couldn't ignore where I was from.

I enjoy driving the emerging art form of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography forward. There are some of us that see the world in HDR and are acutely aware of the patchwork scene our constantly dilating iris creates in the mind. HDR allows those tones to be recreated in a single photograph to evoke a dream-like and strangely satisfying reproduction of the scene as it was meant to be experienced.

I like to build narratives with my art. I'm fascinated by the juxtaposition of the fantastic over the mundane mixed with just enough irreverent humor to keep things interesting.

As an illustrator I capture quiet moments - the silence before the storm, or after a snowfall. I share a narrative, a story superimposed on an image, a mood.

Art is what you look for and want it to be - uplifting, calming, challenging, energizing or humorous... your needs and appreciation are as unique and individual as the art you choose. Don't listen to anyone else - find what strikes the chord within you. I enjoy creating art in a variety of mediums, including pencil, watercolors and pastels. Over the years, I have studied drawing, oil and water color painting, calligraphy, stone sculpture, weaving, computer art and animation.

I enjoy using the dark side of the abstract as my media. Photography I've taken or 3D works I've made usually become part of my creations. I'm a texture artist, but find myself stuck in the textures themselves, turning them into their own forms.

David de Lara is an artist whose unmistakable style and brash approach has continued to make people take notice. For most of the past decade he has drawn and painted figurative work and portraits of women. Many have wondered who the women are, but he doesn't set out to capture anyone in particular. His girls are like dolls used to symbolize the human condition and share thoughts, ideas, feelings, and reactions to events in his life.
