Raised without a television in rural Virginia, Randall Stoltzfus makes richly textured paintings that slowly unfurl into deeply receding landscapes. His obsession with an elusive connection between texture and light leads him to build each image from countless layers of paint. This process can take years. He adds raw pigment, powdered glass, and even touches of gold leaf to give the work the as much optical presence as possible. The result is by turns mysterious, calm, and haunting.
