    ALT ART

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York (July 2009): ALTernative ART, the summer 2009 Art @Gawker exhibition, is a group show of works made by Gawker Artists employing unconventional methods, media, and materials. ALT ART removes art from the canvas, usurping the traditional definitions and presentations of fine art.

Blurring the lines between art and design, three elaborate site specific installations including silk upholstered wall panels and decorative accessories by Elizabeth Bergren, felt installations and accompanying studies by Melissa Gorman, and a wall-mounted steel installation by Sarah Fonzi, utilize repetition of forms and organic references to engage viewers and transform their environments.

Spray painted and splattered stencil boards by Billi Kid, lunch bag and chalkboard drawings by Justin Emerson, and painted skate decks by Shai Dahan, Jordan Seiler and Temple7e provide playful examinations of aesthetics, form and function.

ALT ART is a mischievous exploration of the boundaries of fine art. References to high, low, street and popular culture abound. Functional objects, such as skate decks and lunch bags, are stripped of their traditional utility, instead serving as canvases. Environments are reinterpreted as viewers are forced to interact with or navigate around artworks. ALT ART explores alternative ways to experience the objects and spaces of our habitual lives by reconsidering the presentation and function of fine art.
