    Carrie Villines: Art@Gawker Spring 2009

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    Carrie Villines @ Gawker

NEW YORK (April 2009)- Gawker Artists is pleased to feature the work of Brooklyn based photographer Carrie Villines in our spring Art@Gawker exhibition. Comprised entirely of portraits, the exhibition features works from Villines' series Members Only and Permanent Record and will be on display through June.

Members Only is an ongoing series of portraits profiling members of groups to which Villines does not belong. Each subject is intentionally photographed alone in their own environment, apart from the group that defines them. In Villines' own words, Members Only "raises questions about the creation, definition and perception of social identity. It is also a self-portrait in which I define myself by negation."

Permanent Record features portraits of individuals with text based tattoos, documenting "how people express themselves and tell their stories by permanently inscribing words on their bodies."

In both bodies of work, Villines' striking photographs are thoughtful homages to her subjects. Each work is a celebration of the everyman, allowing the viewer curious and moving glimpses into a greater narrative of human life. When considered together, the works inspire appreciation for the diversity within society and inspire self-reflection as to the associations and messages by which we are all personally defined.
