As Mark Rothko, pioneer of color field painting stated, "we favor the simple expression of the complex thought."
In my work, the luminous fields of color emerging from intricate brushstrokes can be meditative, seductive, contemplative, or a combination of each. I use a natural and subdued color pallet that takes references from nature and the human form, so that each color can evoke a personal thought, emotion, or memory in the viewer. The work is without representational form to allow the viewer's mind to be free to feel whatever it is he or she feels solely as a response to the fields of color and texture. Early abstract artists regarded their work as "the purest kind of painting, one uncomplicated by subject matter."
On some of the paintings I have chosen to use an iridescent medium that is responsive to the play of light on the piece. The painting therefore appears different to the viewer as he or she walks around it. The fields of color shift and react to the viewer's positioning, with the text and texture seemingly emerging and receding within the piece.
